U.S. House Bans WhatsApp on Government Devices Over Data Security Concerns
The U.S. House's Chief Administrative Office has prohibited the use of WhatsApp on all government-issued devices for congressional staffers, citing high-risk vulnerabilities due to insufficient data protection transparency. The directive, issued Monday, mandates immediate removal of the app from House-managed devices, including mobile, desktop, and web browser versions.
Alternative messaging platforms like Microsoft Teams, Wickr, iMessage, and FaceTime were recommended as secure replacements. This move aligns with broader congressional efforts to restrict high-risk technology, including certain AI programs. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone disputed the CAO's assessment, emphasizing WhatsApp's widespread use among lawmakers and staff.
